Our area offers some of the finest dining in New Jersey and just because we’re in the suburbs doesn’t mean the diversity and quality of cuisine found in nearby New York City is lost here. From elegant French and contemporary Italian to rustic American and spicy Thai, there’s a restaurant for every occasion and taste.
To avoid disappointment, please call ahead to confirm whether or not a restaurant is BYO. Licenses can change, better safe than empty handed!
And please check back often! This list is a work in progress, only a fraction of the area’s restaurants are included. Also, if you have any suggestions or opinions on a restaurant in the area I welcome your input!

“Restaurant Lorenas is a Seasonally Inspired French Restaurant located in Maplewood, NJ. On June 15th, 2005, new owners Chef Humberto Campos Jr. and fiancé Lorena Perez came to Maplewood to pursue their dream of having a quaint and romantic restaurant. As an alumnus of the C.I.A. and a graduate from New Jersey's top kitchens, Chef Campos will be offering a French based menu inspired by the seasons.”
Rated Number 2 of top 10 NJ Restaurants by Star-Ledger, Jan. 1, 2006: “Our number two restaurant of the year and our other 4-star rating of 2005, Lorena's (168 Maplewood Ave., Maplewood, 973-763-4460), got off to a running start in the building occupied until May by the much-loved Jocelyne's.
Chef-owner Humberto Campos Jr. kept the understated French atmosphere, but added his own masterful voice to the menu. One of our favorite dishes there was the seared Hudson Valley duck foie gras ($18), with a vanillascented dried fruit relish and a Banyuls wine reduction. An interesting entree involves medallions of pork confit ($24), sweetened with caramelized apples, chestnuts and baby carrots. For dessert ($8) you can still have "traditional" créme brulée, but those who want something a little different should try the warm pear tarte tatin, with a warm quince sauce and vanilla bean ice cream.”

St. James Gate Publick House
American, Irish Pub Fare
167 Maplewood Avenue
“Over in the heart of Maplewood Village, father and son duo John and John Mead Jr. have established their own following at St. James' Gate Publick House. Although only open for 18 months, this family has been able to capture the spirit of an Irish pub. Father and son travel to Ireland as much as possible and have imported wooden tabletops made in County Derry, Ireland. The unique floor was made out of old pressed Guinness vats.
The 80-year-old bar is the centerpiece of the pub and a wonderful place to catch up with friends. Sit in a comfortable booth or relax by the fireplace to enjoy hearty dishes such as the Gaelic-style steak with wild mushrooms and Irish whiskey sauce or the roast chicken. The menu also features authentic Irish classics. The chef is a Maplewood native, John Murphy, who is of Irish heritage. Familiar and friendly with customers, Murphy goes out of his way to make everyone feel at home.
St. James' Gate is gaining a reputation for its wonderful Irish breakfast complete with rashers, bangers, grilled tomatoes, fried eggs and brown bread. It also rates high for Irish coffee. John Jr. contends that his ‘great-grandfather's recipe for Irish coffee with fresh whipped cream is one of the best.’” –North Jersey.com, Claudia Sidoti, March 2005
